Plan a simple Grade 2 math center

A simple math center needs a familiar task, accessible materials, a modeled routine, and a way for children to ask for help. Keep the first rotation short enough to learn the routine before adding more activities.

Prepare one clear task

Pick a focused activity linked to current instruction. Put the directions, required materials, and a finished example together. Read the directions aloud before children work independently.

Teach the routine explicitly

Show where materials live, how to begin, where to put completed work, and what to do when something is unclear. Practice the routine with the group before relying on it during independent rotations.

Plan for different paces

Offer a smaller starting set and an optional extension using the same skill. For early finishers, ask for an explanation or a second strategy rather than simply assigning more of the same problems.

Use what you notice next time

Collect a small sample of work and note which directions or problem types needed help. Adjust the next center based on those observations. These are planning suggestions, not a tested instructional program.
